The always ebullient Jeff Gere has made a name for himself as one of Hawaiis premier storytellers.

If you think his energy is barely contained when hes before an audience of rapt listeners, you can imagine his overflowing enthusiasm over Hawaii hosting its first Pacific-region Talk Story Conference, starting next week at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel, presented by the National Storytelling Network.

There have been other conferences held here with Geres help, but nothing of this magnitude. The Talk Story Conference includes a larger guest list of storytellers from around the world who will participate in a variety of concerts, panels and workshops.

Featured guests include EthNohTec, the San Francisco duo of Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo and Nancy Wang, specialists in Asian folklore who performed at the Smithsonian for Barack Obamas inauguration; inventive Canadian storyteller Anne Glover, who uses tricks with string in performance; veteran African-American storytellers Bobby Norfolk and Diane Ferlatte; longtime author and folklorist Margaret Read MacDonald; and Japanese obake storyteller Masako Sueyoshi.
